Questions and answers

How do I move energy between sites?

We do it by setting up transactions between your sites - your generation facilities sell, and your power-consuming sites buy.

The important thing is that you can set the rate - you don’t have to buy and sell at wholesale prices. It gives you flexibility - you can choose to sell low to reduce costs or sell higher to increase profitability.

This transactional linking lets us move energy without having to build private infrastructure to send your generated electrons through expensive cables. And of course, every transaction is traceable so you can get a clear view of your carbon footprint.

What happens to spill energy?

If you generate more than you consume, you can decide how to handle it. You can partner with other organisations to sell at a fair rate, supply local businesses to keep funds in your community, or sell to other energy users who use UrbanChain. Or you can sell in to the wholesale market if you want to. It’s all about flexibility.

What sort of generators can use UrbanChain?

UrbanChain generators produce electricity from all sorts of renewables, including wind, solar, hydro, biomass and biogas. When demand outstrips supply, we’ll source alternative resources like batteries, EVs and other sources of power before we buy from the wholesale market.

What’s a local market?

It’s a way of sharing the energy you generate. We create a virtual electricity network that lets you:

  • Share energy with your organisation’s other sites
  • Sell to businesses and organisations you’ve partnered with
  • Supply organisations in your area
  • Sell excess generation to our wider pool of users
  • Bring your supply chain in to reduce your overall carbon footprint.

It doesn’t need any infrastructure upgrades, and we can do the setup for you.
