Dr. Somayeh Taheri Named On Insider’s Green Power List 2022

UrbanChain CEO Dr. Somayeh Taheri has been named on Insider’s Green Power List 2022.

The 39-year-old features alongside Andy Burnham and Steve Rotheram, mayors of Greater Manchester and Liverpool respectively, and Chief Executive of Electricity North West Peter Emery.

Just 33 names have made the list which has been divided into three categories: Champions, Advocates and Innovators.

Dr. Taheri, who founded UrbanChain in 2017, was listed among five others in the Innovators section which labels the individuals as ‘pioneering new ways of addressing the climate crisis’.

On being recognised in Insider North West’s inaugural Green Power List, Dr. Taheri said: “To be even considered alongside the many people that are addressing how we can create a sustainable future for our planet is an honour.”

Dr. Taheri founded UrbanChain in 2017 and has since created a renewable energy market called P2P Exchange, allocated green certificates leading to carbon-neutral bills at least 25 per cent lower for consumers, and made renewables a viable option.

Under Taheri’s involvement with Together Housing Group, 1,000 houses are to be on-boarded to UrbanChain’s peer-to-peer green energy exchange.

This is following a £2m pilot programme for homes to be fitted with solar panels and battery storage systems in 2019. Using UrbanChain’s AI system and blockchain technology, renewable energy from the project will be delinked from the wholesale market and linked directly to the tenants, creating something of an independent renewable energy market, called the P2P Exchange.

Taheri and UrbanChain are also in partnership with the West Suffolk Local Energy Market. UrbanChain offers P2P systems of £280/MWh to businesses located in the Mildenhall Estate where current rates are £450/MWh.

Excess energy from the Mildehall scheme is being used to on-board two hotels into the P2P energy trading market.
